The test

Real or AI?

0 images. One question each. After every answer we show you exactly where the giveaway was — or why there wasn't one.

Fair warning

This is calibrated to be hard. Several of the “obviously AI” images are real photographs. Most people score around half — that result is the point, not a failure.

Questions people ask

Can you really tell if an image is AI generated just by looking?

Less and less. The classic tells — six fingers, garbled text, waxy skin — were artifacts of 2022-2023 models and current generations largely clear them. On modern images, careful viewers perform close to chance. That is the honest answer, and it is why provenance matters more than pixel-peeping.

What is the average score on this test?

Most people land around 5 or 6 out of 10. The test deliberately includes real photographs that look synthetic — over-retouched portraits, HDR landscapes, studio product shots — because the most common mistake is assuming anything that looks too perfect must be AI.

Does SlopDetector check images I upload?

No. This quiz uses our own images with known answers; there is no image-detection model behind it. Our detector reads text. We are deliberate about this — image 'detectors' that return a confidence percentage are frequently wrong in both directions, and a wrong accusation does real damage.

What actually works for identifying AI images?

Provenance beats inspection. Look for a traceable creator with history predating 2022, check whether the same image appears elsewhere with an earlier date via reverse image search, and look at C2PA content credentials where present. Context — the account posting it, the claims around it — is usually more diagnostic than the image itself.
